Watch this if you liked: “Jaws”, “Razorback”.
The movie title "Chaw" (pronounced "Chow") is supposedly a Chungcheong dialect word for an animal trap used in the central and northwest parts of the country. Similar to the 1985 "Razorback", but instead of a giant man-eating razorback who holds grudges against humans, the enormous wild boars (yes, there's more than one) in "Chaw" is left with no choice but to chow down on the dead human bodies when their habitat is destroyed by humans, leaving them with limited food resources. This inevitably causes them to develop a taste for humans flesh.Set in a small village, a retired hunter's (Jang Hang-seon) daughter is the latest pig chow for the beast and the suave detective Shin (Park Hyeok-gweon) arrives from Seoul to investigate. Also in town is brave cop Kim (Eom Tae-woong), who's been transferred from the capital, a world-renown hunter (Yun Je-mun) and young ecologist (Jeong Yu-mi). While they hunt the boar, the boar hunts them in a dark cat and mouse game through the forest.Opening up to a few disturbing scenes of hunters mercilessly killing wild animals, the film's mood later makes its transition to a bunch of clumsy policemen on duty at a crime scene. Constantly tripping and falling, it is then you know you're in for a man-eating wild boar movie with comedy. Watching the screwball police squad is like seeing a Korean version of the 1984 comedy "Police Academy"! The construction and the characters are common, but their personal quirks and silly interaction maintains human interest until the beast's next appearance. One of the most prominent characters is a gothic-styled madwoman with a baby doll played by Go Seo-heui. Although with less runtime, she is by far much creepier than the boar itself, appearing in places where you least expect her to be and a behaviour so peculiar it's hard to anticipate her next movement.Leading actor Tae-woong could do no wrong as the short-tempered yet courageous cop, Hyeok-gweon is good as the cool and calm detective, Je-mun aces as the arrogant hunter, Hang-seon does justice as the "Mr Miyagi" of hunting, and Yu-mi the metal-mouthed ecologist who is eager to film the boar on camera.Needless to say, the pig itself is a character too, created through CGI and by the same people who did "Star Wars: Episode One" aliens. Despite that, the visual effects seemed just passable as a student's project. Cinematography could've been better improved. And you could never actually see the wild hog really take a bite into the humans, only hear the chomps, grunts and screams, while the camera goes into a filming frenzy.Overall, it's a delightfully entertaining movie with unique characters and scenarios that will leave you in thrills and laughter.
